Madison thought she had the perfect life... Great career at Nordstrom, the Southern California lifestyle and all the creature comforts that her hard work provided her. Madison had worked at Nordstrom for 20 years in the Men's Sportswear department loving every minute of it. Towards the end of her career with Nordstrom she was given the dire news that she had Lupus. Unable to keep the long hours of retail she had to finally leave the job that she had loved so dearly. At the same time her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Her world was crumbling quickly.
Madison had saved over the twenty years working at Nordstrom so she had the confidence that financially she was okay. That soon would be taken from her as well. She had become friends with another woman at her bible study. The lady moved in to her house so they could share costs. Madison left for a 6 week trip to Hawaii and Oregon shortly thereafter. She later discovered that during the time she was gone the lady depleted all of her bank accounts leaving her penniless. Without a source of income Madison had to sell a lot of her belongings to survive. The banks opened investigations but were slow moving in the resolution process and still to this day the balances for most of her accounts were never restored. The lady was ultimately sent to jail.
In the meantime, Madison was embarassed and ashamed at what happened. She pulled away from her friends and being an only child with both parents passed away she had little family. The Someone Cares Soup Kitchen became that family for her and provided a very loving, non-judgmental atmosphere. The hot, nutritious meal helped her greatly in dealing with Lupus.
Madison, like so many others who eat at the Soup Kitchen never thought in their wildest dreams they would ever be at the Soup Kitchen for a hot meal.
